Advanced Modules

Brief Overview

Our popular master’s level advanced modules provide you with the opportunity to extend your clinical reasoning and practical skills and to develop your competence still further in musculoskeletal medicine.

Stepping onto an advanced module with the Society of Musculoskeletal Medicine provides you with access to highly skilled tutors, all of whom are working clinically and can offer their many years of practical, hands-on experience and clinical reasoning skills.

Who are our advanced modules for? Our advanced modules are open to all experienced HCPC registered allied health professionals, registered osteopaths, registered nurses and medical practitioners wishing to integrate these skills into the clinical management of patients with musculoskeletal conditions and or to provide evidence for their progress through the portfolio route to First Contact Practice and advanced practice.

The modules can be taken as a stand-alone master’s level course, as an optional module towards SOMM’s MSc Musculoskeletal Medicine or as a ‘taster’ module while you might be thinking of stepping onto the MSc, which can be put towards the programme after enrolment.

The Theory & Practice of Injection Therapy module reviews and develops the clinical reasoning and injection therapy skills needed to practise injection therapy effectively and safely.

The Advancing Practice in Musculoskeletal Medicine module is aligned to the four pillars of advanced clinical practice – clinical practice, leadership, education and research. You will develop your skills in manual therapy, diagnostic referral and interpretation and dealing with medical complexity, underpinned by evidence based practice and Best MSK health pathways.

This module has been mapped to the ‘Multi-professional framework for advanced clinical practice in England’ and the ‘Advanced MSK Standards’ released by ARMA. Please click to the AP Mapping Document to view full details.

The modules aim to:

  • Give you the opportunity to reflect on your current practice and identify how you can develop or further develop your advanced practice.
  • Extend knowledge in functional anatomy and biomechanics
  • Develop your competence in joint examination, assessment, clinical diagnosis and treatment including manual therapy, exercise and injection techniques
  • Enhance clinical reasoning and evaluation supported by current evidence
  • Develop non-clinical skills of advanced practice, including presentation skills and critical appraisal of literature/research.
